Artist Statement
In the here and now, I am exploring encaustic, a mix of beeswax and damar crystals. The formula can differ, depending on the intended use of the medium. Both products of nature, when combined and cooked down, this medium moves from solid to molten to solid.
It is organic and I love it – the pouring, painting, scraping back to reveal what is underneath. The surprises…the frustrations... the outcomes.
I explore themes about family, nature, and culture - what is hidden, what has fallen away, what begs to be revealed through the craft of art and writing. I deconstruct personal artifacts and repurpose them into new form.
Poems get written as an integral part of the creative process. I photo document the process of my work.

Encaustic, sometimes paired with mixed media, has been my medium of choice since 2011. Previous to that, I was an assemblage artist, a book artist, both an Artist in the Classroom and California Poet in the Schools. What prepared me for this was a B.A. in Art from Humboldt State University, and an M.A. from Goddard College in Psychology, Art & Movement.
Throughout my life I have sourced the natural world for inspiration: the waterways, forests, seasons, times of day, images from the dream time. Much of my work is an homage to Planet Earth.
